As many as 1 in 4 people in the UK are likely to experience a mental health problem at some point in their life. Recent figures from the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) have revealed a significant increase in reported cases of stress, anxiety & depression in the workplace, with mental health problems becoming one of the most prominent causes of work-related ill-health.

Whether or not work is causing or aggravating a health issue, employers have a legal responsibility to support their employees. This includes assessing the level of risk presented by work-related mental health issues and, where significant risks are identified, putting in place reasonably practicable control measures to reduce this risk.

As part of an effective health & wellbeing strategy, it is helpful for organisations to train a number of staff as mental health first aiders, to ensure mental health problems can be recognised early, and that these individuals have the skills and knowledge to start a supportive, non-judgmental conversation and, where appropriate, signpost a person to seek appropriate professional help.
