First Aid at Work Requalification

Overview

HSE guidance states that once a first aider’s certification has expired, they are no longer considered competent to act as a workplace first aider. Therefore, it is recommended that arrangement is made for individuals to re-qualify before certification expires, to ensure the workplace if not left with a shortfall of first aiders.

To re-qualify, learners are able to attend a shortened 2-day course, but must meet the conditions, described below:

Eligibility

FAW certification is in date or not expired by more than 1 month - eligible for 2-day refresher course

FAW certification is expired by more than 1 month, but not more than 3 months - eligible for 2-day refresher at employer’s discretion (please note that HSE does not consider first aiders competent once certification has expired)

FAW certification is expired by more than 3 months - not eligible for 2-day refresher course, and must complete full 3-day First Aid at Work course

Where a 2-day requalification course is undertaken the learner must provide evidence of their current or previous first aid at work qualification to the training provider before starting the course. The certificate should evidence a regulated qualification, or if not regulated should satisfy HSE requirements.
