First Aid at Work

Overview

This three-day course is ideal for workplaces with more complex hazards, a larger number of employees, or those working with members of the public. Learners can be assured they will gain the skills & knowledge to confidently provide first aid in their workplace until the injured person can be handed over to the emergency services.

This is a Level 3 award, regulated by Ofqual, which sits on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF).

The course can be delivered at your premises, or an alternative venue, for up to 12 persons.

The course is of a practical nature therefore casual clothes should be worn (we recommend trousers).

We strongly recommend that all first aiders complete a half-day refresher annually.

Goals

On completion of the course, all candidates will understand:

  • Principles of first aid

  • The action to be taken in the event of an emergency

  • The correct method of basic life support

  • Use of an Automated External Defibriliator (AED) & chain of survival

  • Appropriate first aid action to be taken for major illnesses

Agenda

The course will include sessions on:

  • Aims & principles of first aid

  • Health & Safety law & First Aid Regulations

  • What to do in an emergency

  • Management of the unconscious casualty

  • Assessment & treatment of a casualty who is wounded or bleeding

  • Assessment & treatment of burns & scalds

  • Dealing with seizures

  • Choking (Adult)

  • Resuscitation (Adult CPR) & use of an AED

  • Fractures

  • Poisoning

  • Anaphylaxis

  • Major illnesses (heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma, diabetes, etc.)

Assessment

Certification of the Emergency First Aid Course is dependent on successful continuous assessment of the student.

Assessment will be through a combination of practical sessions & a short written assessment. The practical elements of the assessment are relatively straightforward, though there is a requirement for students to be fit and healthy enough to complete tasks such as CPR.

The written assessment consists of straightforward questions, though students will be required to have at least a basic knowledge of English.

Students who complete the course and are deemed to have reached the required standard are issued with a certificate which is valid for three years.

We strongly recommend that all first aiders complete a half-day refresher course annually.
