Paediatric First Aid

Overview

This two-day course is designed for those who work with children & infants, and therefore would be of particular interest to school teachers, child minders, playgroup or nursery staff. Learners will gain the skills & knowledge required to respond to a range of paediatric first aid emergencies.

The course fulfils the requirements for first aid training detailed in the Department for Education’s statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage.

The course can be delivered at your premises, or an alternative venue, for up to 12 learners.

The course is of a practical nature therefore casual clothes should be worn (we recommend trousers).

We strongly recommend that all first aiders complete a half-day refresher annually.

Goals

On completion of the course, all candidates will understand:

  • Principles of paediatric first aid

  • The action to be taken in the event of an emergency

  • The correct method of basic life support

  • Use of an Automated External Defibriliator (AED) & chain of survival

  • Appropriate first aid action to be taken for a range of paediatric illnesses & emergencies

Agenda

The course will include sessions on:

  • Role of the Paediatric First Aider

  • Primary survey

  • Resuscitation (CPR & safe use of an AED)

  • Wounds, bleeding & shock

  • Allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis

  • Head, neck & back injuries

  • Seizures

  • Choking

  • Minor injuries

  • Fractures

  • Foreign bodies

  • Diabetes

  • Asthma

  • Meningitis

  • Febrile convulsions

  • Extreme cold & heat

  • Electrical incidents

Assessment

Certification of the Paediatric First Aid Course is dependent on successful continuous assessment of the student.

Assessment will be through a combination of practical sessions & a short written assessment. The practical elements of the assessment are relatively straightforward, though there is a requirement for students to be fit & healthy enough to complete tasks such as CPR.

The written assessment consists of straightforward questions, though students will be required to have at least a basic knowledge of English.

Students who complete the course and are deemed to have reached the required standard are issued with a certificate which is valid for three years.

We strongly recommend that all first aiders complete a half-day refresher annually.
