Oxygen Therapy Administration

Overview

This one-day course allows learners to understand the benefits of oxygen therapy, identify when it is most appropriate to administer oxygen, and how to safely handle & use oxygen cylinders.

The course can be delivered at your premises, or an alternative venue, for up to 12 learners.

The course is of a practical nature therefore casual clothes should be worn (we recommend trousers).

We recommended that all first aiders complete a half-day refresher annually.

Goals

On completion of the course, all candidates will understand:

  • Benefits of oxygen therapy

  • Indications & contraindications for use of oxygen

  • Dangers & safe use, storage & handling of oxygen

  • Administration of oxygen to a casualty in line with approved practice guidance

Agenda

The course will include sessions on:

  • Benefits of oxygen therapy

  • Indications for use of oxygen

  • Contraindications

  • Dangers of using compressed gas

  • Use, storage & handling

  • Operational checks

  • When oxygen is required

  • Practical training

Assessment

Certification of the Oxygen Therapy Course is dependent on successful continuous assessment of the student.

Assessment will be through a combination of practical scenarios, where learners will be required to demonstrate their knowledge & practical skills, and a short written assessment. The written assessment consists of straightforward questions, though students will be required to have at least a basic knowledge of English.

Students who complete the course and are deemed to have reached the required standard are issued with a certificate which is valid for three years.

We strongly recommend that all first aiders complete a half-day refresher course annually.
